Born and raised in the West Country, Mark has harboured a passion for the traditional metal crafts from a young age. Educated in a Plymouth school in the 1970s, where strong emphasis was placed on metal work and technical drawing, Mark's interest in Blacksmithing began. Bucking the expected route into the Dockyard, where his father had worked, he left school to pursue his other passion and became a fisherman.
The six years spent at sea are strongly reflected in several of his collections today.
Upon returning to dry land Mark attended Bicton agricultural college and went on to a job in agricultural engineering and then set up a successful family business in the sheet metal and welding industry, gaining a vast knowlege of metallurgy and metal forming. Blacksmithing remained a passion and a hobby, with a forge at the bottom of the garden, producing metal art, in his spare time.
When the opportunity arose to open his own forge in the original Blacksmiths, located in the beautiful and historic grounds of Mount Edgcumbe Country Park, Mark sold his share in the business and the rest is history!
